Large Diameter TSP Foundation – Blythe
A client engaged Howell Drilling, Inc. to construct a 13-foot diameter x 50-foot deep foundation for a TSP (Telecommunications Service Provider) tower in Blythe, California. The project required precision execution and proactive stabilization measures due to challenging soil conditions.
Challenging Sandy Soil Conditions
The native soils at the site consisted of dry, loose sand, creating a significant risk of sloughing and caving—particularly near the surface. To mitigate this risk and ensure long-term structural stability, our team implemented a strategic overexcavation plan.
- The upper portion of the shaft was overexcavated to approximately 15 feet deep
- Cement slurry was placed to stabilize the upper soils
- This process minimized the potential for collapse and provided a secure starting point for deeper drilling operations
Casing Installation & Controlled Advancement
To further maintain shaft integrity throughout excavation:
- A crane was mobilized to install 12-foot steel casing
- Drilling operations continued inside the casing
- As drilling advanced, the casing was methodically advanced with the bore to maintain wall support
This controlled approach ensured stability all the way to the target 50-foot depth.
Successful Completion & Foundation Ready
The hole was completed to specification, fully stabilized, and prepared for structural placement. With drilling operations finalized, the client was able to:
- Set the reinforcing cage
- Place concrete
- Move forward with construction of the TSP tower
This project demonstrates our ability to execute large-diameter deep foundations in difficult sandy conditions while maintaining safety, structural integrity, and schedule efficiency.
