Summary
This project involved drilling a 55-foot foundation hole in Los Angeles using the LM3. What began as a routine drilling operation quickly turned into a challenging recovery effort.
On the first day, the hole collapsed while the crew was on site, and it was determined that casing would be required. Three 15-foot sections of casing along with the welder were brought to the job site to prepare for stabilization work for the following day.
Upon returning the next morning, it was evident the hole had continued collapsing overnight, and most of the drilled depth had been lost. In addition, site conditions and access meant we were unable to safely pick up all of the casing. Operations were called off for the day to regroup and bring in additional support.
In order to safely install the casing it was determined that a crane truck would be utilized. The crane truck was used to lift and position casing sections while welded together in the field.
Conditions were demanding. The hole was wet and required constant monitoring to keep both the hole and pit full to maintain pressure and prevent further collapse.
This project reinforced the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability under difficult ground conditions.
